The Monrovia School Adoption Project is based on research conducted on the educational sector in Liberia and our own ongoing research into the needs of individual schools in meeting standard academic statuses. Funding in the amount of approximately $300,000.00 (see budget breakdown) is requested for the total implementation of the project to cover staff and infrastructure development, direct student spending and basic community engagement.

Preliminary Research and Needs Analysis Result:

The Children's Hope Community School has met the selection criteria to pilot the Monrovia School Adoption Project. Children's Hope Community School was founded April 28, 1989 under the leadership of elder Augustine Neaweah, to meet the high demand of education within the West Point Community in Monrovia.

Current Needs:

Based on a recent needs assessment visit to the school, Children Hope currently has the following urgent needs:

  • Textbooks, and school supplies for the students
  • Uniform for students
  • Office supplies
  • Adequate training for instrctors and faculty
  • Teachers to supervise classroom activities
  • Building renovation and expansion
  • Safe drinking water
  • Food
  • Playground
  • Classrooms to accommodate more children in the community
  • Library
  • Infirmary
  • Computers

Project Plan and Success Factors:

The Monrovia School Adoption Project will work with the students and teachers of Children's Hope over a five year period to develop their academic standards and teaching skills as well as improve their social and economic conditions through community empowerment. Students, teachers and the community will benefit from a number of developmental programs including staff development, student empowerment and community ownership and partnership. The students will improve their overall basic academic skills and bridge social, economic and technological gaps; teachers will have the opportunity to become better educators by gaining new holistic approaches to teaching; and the community will gain for its children the hope of a better future.
