SMILE LIBERIA SCHOOL ADOPTION PROGRAM

Schools in poor Liberian communities continue to face academic and economic challenges. As a result, students have high deficiency in the areas of basic math, science and reading. They are often below the academic and technological standards of their peers elsewhere.

Also, due to economical constraints, these schools lack proper and safe learning facilities, as well as adequately trained teachers and faculty members. It is been determined that, since Liberia's poverty rate is well above 80%, this lack of quality education is the root cause of its suffering.

The School Adoption Program aims to conduct several projects that will adopt and assist schools in the poorest communities of Liberia. The program will cater to the specific educational and economic needs of the schools affected. The goal of the program is to conduct individual projects on a 5-year basis, which will address the needs of underprivileged community schools; 1 school per geographic location.

The targeted grade range for the schools is K-6. The project will provide several educational and health incentives for the schools. This include school supplies, textbooks, uniforms, faculty training, infrastructure development, playgrounds, infirmary, and safe drinking water.

Over time, the long term impact of the program will be more far reaching than the individual communities we engage. Moving throughout the country, this program looks to impact no fewer than 100,000 children and twice that number in the communities we will be working with. The end result of this program, which is in alignment with our strategic goals, is to use the power of quality education as a way of reducing poverty and suffering in Liberia

Current Status:

We are happy to announce the kickoff of the Liberia School Adoption Program. Our first project, the Monrovia School Adoption Project, was initiated on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 with the donation of textbooks, and school and office supplies to the Children Hope Community School.

Children Hope Community School is an underprivileged school in West Point, one of Monrovia's poorest communities. Through a strategic selection process and need analysis, Children Hope Community School was chosen for adoption.
