Mission: Bringing smiles to children in the poorest communities of Liberia by providing them access to quality education.
Vision: Leveraging the power of quality education to reduce poverty and illiteracy among underprivileged Liberians.
On February 11, 2006, four young men (William Ward, Achilles Killen, Ernest Harmon, and Cyrus Strother) met to discuss issues pertaining to the educational well being of Liberian youths and ex-child soldiers, as well as orphans living in Liberia. The meeting was centered around contributions and changes they could make to improve the lives of the needy in Liberia. The result of this meeting was the formation of a nonprofit organization.
On February 25, 2006, the name Smile Liberia International (SLI) Inc. was chosen to forward their cause. SLI, Inc. became a registered nonprofit organization on May 15, 2006.
Smile Liberia was formed to provide much-needed educational assistance to impoverished children, former child soldiers and orphans of war-ravished Liberia. It was formed with the mission of bringing smiles to the needy by providing them access to quality education. We believe that education can be used to reduce the high poverty and illiteracy margin in Liberia, as well as rehabilitate the children who have been directly affected by the Liberian civil war.
